Najčešće pogreške kod pisanja eseja na državnoj maturi

1. Gramatika: Apostrofi na krivom mjestu.
Apostrof u engleskom jeziku označava posvojnost (John’s) i izostavljanje samoglasnika pri skraćivanju (don’t). Česta je pogreška korištenje apostrofa kada imenicu želimo napisati u množini:
NETOČNO:
The horse’s are in the field.
Janes horse is over there.
The girls dresses are ready for them to collect.
TOČNO:
The horses are in the field.
Jane’s horse is over there.
The girls’ dresses are ready for them to collect.

 
2. Gramatika: Your/you’re.
Your je posvojna zamjenica ‘tvoj’. You’re je skraćeni oblik ‘you are’ = ‘ti si’. Ovo je jedna od najčešćih pogrešaka u engleskom jeziku.
NETOČNO:
Your beautiful.
TOČNO:
You’re beautiful.

3. Gramatika: Their/they’re/there.
Ako se vodite isključivo izgovorom, velika je šansa da ćete napraviti ovu pogrešku. Their označava posvojnost. They’re je skraćeni oblik od ‘they are’, a there znači ‘tamo’.
NETOČNO:
Their going to be here soon.
We should contact they’re agent.
Can we use there boat?
TOČNO:
They’re going to be here soon.
We should contact their agent.
Can we use their boat?

4. Stil: Kontrakcije (skraćivanje) u formalnom stilu pisanja.

Izbjegavajte skraćivanje (don’t, you’re, didn’t, I’m) apostrofom kada pišete esej na maturi jer skraćivanje označava neformalni stil. Radije riječi pišite rastavljeno: you are, did not, could not, I am, do not,…

5. Vokabular: I.e. ili e.g.?
Ove kratice vrlo se često koriste u esejističkom stilu, ali ponekad i pogrešno. ‘I.e.’ znači ‘drugim riječima’ (lat. Id est), a ‘e.g.’ znači ‘naprimjer’ (lat. Exempli gratia).
NETOČNO:
He liked many different cheeses, i.e. cheddar, camembert and brie.
He objects to the changes – e.g. he won’t be accepting them.
TOČNO:
He liked many different cheeses, e.g. cheddar, camembert and brie.
He objects to the changes – i.e. he won’t be accepting them.

6. Rečenična struktura: Gomilanje.
Gomilanje previše riječi/ideja u jednu rečenicu bez logičke ili sintaktičke povezanosti kada je riječ o nabrajanju. Ako želite iznijeti više ideja koje su međusobno povezane, koristite veznike ili rastavite ideje u nekoliko jednostavnijih rečenica.
PRIMJER:
Video games are bad because they make children study less, have less concentration, they become passive and introverted, many children avoid school, sometimes they even skip classes, often parents misunderstand children who play video games, sometimes they ban video games after 6 p.m.
ISPRAVNO:
Video games are bad because they make children study less and have less concentration. Children become passive and introverted and many of them avoid school. Sometimes they even skip classes. Parents often misunderstand children who play video games and sometimes they ban video games after 6 p.m. 

7. Rečenična struktura i vokabular: Pretjerano korištenje veznika ‘and’, ‘but’ i ‘because’.

NETOČNO:

I think that the idea behind school uniforms is good and people only mean well for children because children can be bullied because of clothes but people often don’t think about the expression of identity because children express their feelings and states of mind through clothes because they follow certain trends.

8. Vokabular: Natrpavanje sinonima.
Ili parafraziranje već rečenoga. Zašto to radimo? Da bismo sami sebe i čitatelja uvjerili ne samo u ispravnost ideje, već i u bogatstvo vokabulara koje posjedujemo.
Umjesto „School uniforms should be banned from schools, which means that pupils should stop wearing them.“
Dovoljno je „School uniforms should be banned from schools.“
Umjesto „I find the idea very rational, sensible, lucid and prudent.“
Dovoljno je „I find the idea sensible.“
